In celebration of its 52nd Founding Anniversary and in observance of the holy month of Ramadan, the Provincial Government of Basilan officially launched “Masaajid of the World: Miniature Masjid” on February 26 at the Basilan Government Center in Sta. Clara, Lamitan City.
The event is part of the Tennun Pakaradjaan sa Ramadhan: BASILANatin 2026 celebration, anchored on the theme “Weaving Faith, Unity, and Service for the People of Basilan.” It highlights the province’s commitment to preserving Islamic heritage, strengthening cultural identity, and fostering unity among its people during this sacred month.
Mayor Sitti Djalia Turabin-Hataman expressed her heartfelt thanks to the Provincial Government of Basilan for including Isabela City in the “Masaajids of the World” exhibit. She noted that the idea was inspired by a display at the Islamic Museum in Malaysia and emphasized that the exhibit demonstrates the universality of Islam, the equality of all people as taught in the Prophet’s last sermon, the importance of Arabic in prayers and the Quran, and the beauty of Islamic culture. She said, “Everyone is amazed at the beauty of our mosques. I am reminded of what our beloved Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said: Allah (SWT) is beautiful, and He loves beauty. He loves everything that is beautiful—the way we dress, our character, our architecture—and I really think this exhibit is a reflection of how beautiful Islam is.”
Basilan Governor Mujiv Hataman expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to celebrate Ramadan alongside the province’s founding anniversary. He noted the historic significance of merging the observance with the Pakaradjaan celebrations, extending the festivities to a full month under the slogan “Tennun Pakaradjaan sa Ramadhan” to raise awareness of Islamic values among all communities, and thanked the participating agencies for their efforts. He said, “May we be given strength and the opportunity to come together on this day… Above all, I want to thank everyone, especially the agencies that participated. Your efforts and dedication have made this celebration possible.”
Dr. Alzad Sattar underscored the vital role of the masjid in nurturing faith and unity, stating, “The masjid, or mosque, is the heart of the Muslim community. It is considered the house of Allah, where Muslims gather to worship and connect with Him.” He reminded the audience that the masjid serves not only as a place of prayer but also as a center for spiritual growth, learning, and community cohesion.
The concept and inspiration behind the Miniature Masjid exhibit were also showcased via an AVP. The presentation featured iconic masaajid from different parts of the world, creatively interpreted through scaled-down models that reflect architectural beauty, historical significance, and spiritual symbolism.
The program culminated in the unveiling and judging of the Masaajids, with 25 participants proudly presenting their miniature creations. Cash prizes were awarded as follows: P300,000 for first place, P250,000 for second place, P200,000 for third place, and P50,000 consolation prizes. Special awards included Best in Narrative and Storytelling and Best in Cultural Representation. Entries were evaluated by judges Iñigo Roberto Roces, Architect Alvaro Cabanting Jr., and Assistant Professor Darwin Absari from the UP Institute of Islamic Studies.
The event concluded with Iftar, bringing together officials, participants, and guests in a shared meal that symbolized unity, gratitude, and communal harmony. Through activities like the Masaajid of the World: Miniature Masjid launch, the Provincial Government of Basilan reaffirms its dedication to promoting faith-driven programs, cultural preservation, and inclusive celebrations that honor both the province’s history and its spiritual traditions.
