The City Government of Isabela under the administration of Mayor Sitti Djalia Turabin-Hataman, convened representatives of indigenous peoples communities (IPCs) on September 8 for a Consultation and Planning Session in preparation for the 2025 Indigenous Peoples Month celebration. The activity was spearheaded by CSO Desk Officer Norhaiya Macusang.
The session provided a venue to present updates on the status of the Indigenous Peoples Mandatory Representative (IPMR), honorariums, and various programs and projects implemented for the welfare of the city’s indigenous communities. Discussions also touched on important concerns such as ancestral domain rights and registration processes, which remain vital in upholding the rights and recognition of the indigenous peoples in the city.
As part of the consultation, the IPMRs and IPC leaders worked together to map out the highlights and activities for this year’s IP Month celebration. Emphasis was given to ensuring that the programs will reflect the culture, needs, and aspirations of Isabela City’s indigenous communities.
The Indigenous Peoples Month, observed every October under Proclamation No. 1906, s. 2009, is a nationwide celebration that recognizes the rights, heritage, and contributions of indigenous peoples in nation-building. (Words by SJ Asakil/Photos by M. Santos, CIO)
