The Isabela City Solid Waste Management Board convened for its 1st Quarter meeting on January 13 to address pressing issues and plan initiatives aimed at improving waste management across the city. The agenda focused on evaluating ongoing programs, introducing new strategies, and fostering collaboration among stakeholders to ensure sustainable and effective waste management practices.
City Administrator Pedrito Eisma, representing Mayor Sitti Djalia Turabin-Hataman, underscored the critical importance of tackling solid waste management challenges, particularly in Isabela City’s coastal areas. He highlighted the city’s commitment to finding innovative and sustainable solutions to the pressing issue of garbage, emphasizing the role of initiatives like the Sea Sweepers program, which focuses on cleaning and preserving coastal zones.
CGSO-Solid Waste Management Division Chief Saddam Lagoyo presented the division’s July-December 2024 Accomplishment Report, showcasing progress in environmental programs like the Nara TREE Planting initiative and the ManGROVE Reforestation Project, both of which aim to enhance the city’s green spaces and coastal ecosystems. He also drew attention to the Isabela BRICKS Program, an innovative approach to recycling non-biodegradable waste by converting it into functional materials such as bricks and hollow blocks.
Meanwhile, Project Management Field Focal Anna Sahibil also outlined upcoming activities in the 2025 calendar, including January’s Zero Waste Month celebrations, coastal clean-ups, school and cemetery visits, and renewed advocacy for environmental protection.
Further stressed was the importance of effectively implementing Executive Order No. 038, s. 2019, which strengthens local waste management strategies and community participation. However, also acknowledged challenges, particularly in sustaining advocacy efforts amid competing priorities, such as during the election season.
The meeting saw active participation from key stakeholders, including Councilors Jeromy Casas and SP Committee on SWM Yusop Abubakar, City Treasurer Mary Jane Abenojar, and City Agriculturist Maria Gina Alberto.
