GSP BASILAN NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL, HAPISABELA MOBILE LIBRARY TEAM UP FOR PROJECT ‘READTOGROW’

In a collaborative effort to support struggling readers, the HAPIsabela Mobile Library joined forces with the Girl Scouts of the Philippines (GSP) Basilan for the latter’s “ReadtoGrow” initiative. Held in Barangay La Piedad on May 8, this neighborhood-based learning program aimed to cultivate a love for reading among young learners.
A total of 30 children benefitted from the program, which provided them with access to quality reading materials and engaging learning activities.
Spearheaded through the initiative of Mayor Sitti Djalia Turabin-Hataman, along with City Information Officer and concurrent GAD Focal Person Mendry-Ann Lim, the project reflects the local government’s strong commitment to inclusive education and literacy development.
The activity also marked a significant milestone for Cadet Girl Scout Asmah Ali-Fakhri Abdulsabour, a senior or ambassador-level scout, who is working to earn a prestigious GSP award through her education-focused community project.
The impact of the ReadtoGrow initiative has been evident in the reading progress of the learners. From an initial assessment score of 65%, they reached 85% in March, and now show remarkable improvement with a 95% proficiency rate.
Adding to the holistic approach of the event, the HAPIsabela Mobile Kitchen, led by City Nutrition Officer Jesielyn O. Puno, served nutritious arroz caldo to all learners, reinforcing the importance of health in the learning process.
Recognizing the value of community-driven education, the partnership between GSP-Basilan and the HAPIsabela Mobile Library continues to bring hope and opportunity to children. By combining books, compassion, and collective effort, the program addresses the pressing literacy challenges in the area.
The ReadtoGrow initiative stands as a testament to the power of collective action in empowering young learners, ensuring that every child—regardless of background—has the chance to grow through reading.(Words by R. Natividad-Sarael, GAD Unit /Photos by K.Galano, IsaTV)
