Aromas of homegrown dishes filled the air as creativity and competition came alive during Bene Ya Kusina: The Intersectoral Cooking Contest, held on April 28 along James Walter Strong Boulevard, as part of the 25th Charter Anniversary of Isabela City and the 2026 Sakayan Festival. Spearheaded by the Local Government Unit of Isabela under the leadership of Mayor Sitti Djalia Turabin-Hataman, through the City Tourism Office, the event was also graced by Vice Mayor Ar-Jhemar Ajibon.
The activity brought together participants from various sectors—including business groups, youth organizations, fraternities, banks, and security agencies—in a vibrant culinary showcase of skill and innovation. Each team presented its own take on local and traditional dishes, using fresh, locally sourced ingredients that highlighted the rich flavors and culinary heritage of Isabela City and Basilan.
Excitement rose as teams faced two thrilling challenges designed to test both creativity and resourcefulness. In the Sakayan Full Course Meals Preparation, participants raced against time to craft a complete course—an appetizer, a rice meal with two viands, and a dessert—presented with eye-catching, Sakayan-inspired plating.
The intensity continued with the Secret Recipe Challenge, where teams sourced ingredients from the local market within a limited budget and timeframe. With a surprise ingredient added, participants demonstrated quick thinking and teamwork as they transformed simple components into standout dishes within one hour.
Entries were judged based on taste, nutrition, creativity, presentation, and cost efficiency, with taste bearing the highest percentage. Judges carefully evaluated each dish to ensure a fair and thorough competition.
The culinary showdown will culminate in an awarding ceremony on May 2 at Isabela City Park in Barangay Tabiawan, where top-performing teams will be recognized. The Champion will receive P20,000.00 and a plaque of recognition, while the second and third placers will be awarded P15,000.00 and P10,000.00, respectively. Consolation prizes and special awards will also be given to deserving participants.
