SAILING THROUGH TIME: PARADA SAKAYAN CELEBRATES ISABELA CITY’S HERITAGE, VOYAGE AND HOPE

In the midst of Basilan, being rocked by the waves of the Basilan Strait, sits Isabela City—a city where the sea has always been greater than a line. It is a bridge. A keeper of tales. A cradle of origins.
Even before concrete roads and digital maps, the sakayan—the ancient boat—was the lifeline of the inhabitants. It brought the Sama, the Tausug, the Yakan, the Visayans, the Chavacano-speaking settlers, and countless others to the shores of what would become a melting pot of traditions and cultures. These boats did not only transport bodies across the seas, but more so, they transported dreams, hopes, and ways of life.
Every sakayan that arrived in Isabela City had a story of courage and longing. It brought farmers who cultivated the soil arable, fisherfolk who lived in sync with the waves, traders and artisans who knit the city’s economic and cultural tapestry together. The sakayan became an emblem of determination—of arriving, of settling, of starting anew.
In Isabela City, life presents us with tranquil seas and stormy seas, but we ride on—unshaken. The tale of our city is retold in each individual story of trials and triumphs. From the diligent street vendor, to the student walking miles to attend school, to the mother single-handedly taking care of a family on faith and hope—each is embarking on a journey, informed by the same waters that have shaped generations who came before us.
Isabela City is not merely a location on the map; it is a living testament to unity in diversity. We are a people united by the tides of time and the call of the future. Like the sakayan, we are vessels of culture, strength, and spirit—ever moving forward, ever proud of where we came from.
And let us celebrate our heritage and paddle as one toward the sunrise. For in every Isabeleño’s heart is the heart of a voyager—grizzled, proud, and hopeful.
