In celebration of the World Tourism Month 2024 with the theme “Tourism and Peace,” City Government of Isabela through the City Tourism Office hosted “Mastering the Art of Yakan Culture”, September 13.
The workshop aimed to promote a deeper understanding and appreciation of traditional Yakan culture, particularly focusing on the artistry of Tanyak-Tanyak facial makeup and the wearing of traditional Yakan attire. Through this event, participants were not only introduced to the cultural significance of these practices but also encouraged to actively engage in the preservation and promotion of Yakan heritage.
City Tourism Officer Claudio Ramos II, in his message emphasized the importance of initiatives like these in fostering cultural pride, preserving local traditions, and ensuring continuity for future generations.
The workshop, attended by 32 participants including elementary, secondary and IPED teachers, as well as members of the Pasangen Cultural Dance Troupe, was facilitated by cultural worker and peace advocate Victoria Siason, and Bairan Tobboh, master of the Tanyak-Tanyak tradition. Their comprehensive presentation delved into the historical and cultural significance of the facial makeup tradition and the proper way to wear Yakan attire, offering participants hands-on experience in these traditional practices.
Siason discussed the history and meaning behind the facial makeup and Yakan clothing, while Tobboh provided a hands-on demonstration of the Tanyak-Tanyak technique. The participants had the opportunity to try on traditional Yakan attire, gaining a deeper understanding of its importance in Yakan heritage. A fashion show was later executed, where participants proudly showcased the Yakan attire, highlighting the beauty and elegance of traditional clothing while celebrating the rich cultural heritage of the Yakan people.
