In observance of the holy month of Ramadhan, the City Government of Isabela hosted the Grand Iftar 2026 at Fuego-Fuego Beachfront, Barangay Tabiawan, on March 17, bringing together over a thousand participants, including community leaders, faith-based representatives, and residents in a shared celebration of faith, unity, and service.
The gathering served as a meaningful platform for reflection and solidarity, highlighting the spiritual significance of fasting and the importance of compassion and discipline during Ramadan. Basilan Governor Mujiv Hataman, along with guests and participants, convened in the late afternoon, culminating in the collective breaking of the fast at sunset, followed by the Maghrib prayer, symbolizing communal harmony and shared faith.
In her keynote message, Mayor Sitti Djalia Turabin-Hataman expressed her gratitude to everyone, noting that a meaningful tradition has been established and expressing hope that it will continue—not only through the annual Grand Iftar but also through other gatherings that strengthen unity, deepen understanding, and foster brotherhood across Isabela City and the entire province of Basilan.
The program featured inspirational messages from esteemed speakers, including Dr. Alzad Sattar of the University of the Philippines – Institute of Islamic Studies, who tackled the value of fasting in strengthening discipline and faith, and Dr. Aboulkhair Tarason of the Basilan Ulama Supreme Council and BARMM Council of Leaders, who shared the spiritual meaning of fasting in Islam. Both speakers emphasized the value of fasting in strengthening faith, discipline, and spiritual awareness.
An interfaith segment further underscored unity among diverse religious communities, with messages delivered by Pastor Ronald Paulino of the United Evangelical Church Inc. and Rev. Fr. Ronel Antonio of the Prelature of Isabela de Basilan. Their reflections highlighted mutual respect, peace, and shared responsibility in nation-building.
The Grand Iftar 2026 stands as a testament to Isabela City’s enduring commitment to promoting unity, inclusivity, and respect for cultural and religious traditions—strengthening the bonds that bring communities together. (Words by SJ Asakil/Photos by M. Santos, CIO)
