The Provincial Government of Basilan formally launched the nationwide observance of the 18-Day Campaign to End Violence Against Women (VAW) on November 25 at the Basilan Government Center in Sta. Clara, Lamitan City. The event gathered local officials, community leaders, women’s organizations, and participants from various sectors, all committed to promoting a VAW-free society.
This year, the campaign carries the national theme, “UNiTEd for a VAW-free Philippines,” which underscores collective action and community involvement in protecting women’s rights and promoting gender equality. Through this initiative, the provincial government aims to strengthen advocacy programs, raise public awareness, and implement local initiatives to prevent and respond to cases of violence against women.
Dr. Adzhar Sattar, Internal Vice Chairman of the Basilan Ulama Supreme Council, delivered the welcome and opening remarks. He highlighted the role of faith and community in fostering respect for women and safeguarding their dignity, emphasizing that religious and community guidance are essential in preventing gender-based violence.
Mayor Sitti Djalia Turabin-Hataman, delivered a keynote message focusing on women’s empowerment as a key driver of inclusive and sustainable community development. She highlighted various initiatives undertaken by the city government, including skill-building programs, the enactment of supportive ordinances, and the establishment of a fully functional Local Council for Women (LCW) to ensure women’s voices are heard in governance and decision-making.
Mayor Turabin-Hataman, who graced the event as guest speaker, also emphasized programs that directly support women’s livelihoods, such as the provision of farming tools to local women’s organizations, helping enhance agricultural productivity and promote economic independence. Beyond policy initiatives, she shared personal reflections on Islamic beliefs, demonstrating how faith and cultural values can inspire women to contribute meaningfully to society. She encouraged women to embrace both empowerment and tradition, showing that education, active civic participation, and spirituality can work together to strengthen communities.
Governor Mujiv Hataman reaffirmed the province’s dedication to creating safer communities and enhancing gender and development initiatives across all barangays and local offices. He emphasized the need for widespread awareness campaigns to inform the public about women’s rights, challenge the silence surrounding abuse, and encourage everyone to take an active role in safeguarding women.
He also highlighted the vital part men play within families and communities, urging them to share responsibility in preventing violence against women. To track the effectiveness of the campaign, Governor Hataman presented specific goals at the barangay and household levels, ensuring that efforts to combat VAW are both community-centered and systematically monitored.
