The Provincial Government of Basilan, led by Governor Mujiv Hataman through its Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office (PSWDO), in cooperation with the City Government of Isabela, celebrated the 33rd National Children’s Month on November 25 at the Isabela City Civic and Cultural Center. The event featured “USAP Tayo, Gob! Duk Kamakanan,” a program that underscores the importance of dialogue between the government and children to ensure that their rights, welfare, and voices are recognized.
Delivering the opening remarks, PSWDO representative Anwary Akalun emphasized that the celebration serves as a vital reminder of the collective responsibility to uphold and protect the rights of every child in Basilan. He highlighted the importance of creating safe, inclusive, and nurturing environments where children can thrive. Further reinforcing this commitment, LGOO VI Jolina Abam led the Panatang Makabata, a solemn pledge affirming the duty of adults, communities, and institutions to safeguard children’s dignity and well-being.
2nd District Basilan Provincial Board Member Nur-Khan Istarul highlighted the profound impact of present governance on the future of young Basileños, reaffirming the province’s long-term commitment to child development.
Isabela City Mayor Sitti Djalia Turabin-Hataman delivered a message emphasizing the city’s dedication to fostering a safe, inclusive, and empowering environment for every child. She highlighted ongoing initiatives that promote child protection, participatory governance, and access to education and social services.
This was followed by the State of the Children Address by Governor Mujiv Hataman, who underscored the province’s ongoing efforts to safeguard children’s rights and ensure that government programs remain responsive to their needs. He also announced the proposed construction of a child-minding center and a children’s park.
Participants also received giveaways such as bags and school supplies, along with P1,000 each from Governor and Mayor Hataman as part of the celebration, fostering a festive and engaging atmosphere.
One of the key components of the event was the Orientation on RA 11930 (Anti-OSAEC and CSAEM Act) delivered by Atty. Yarah Musa, Legal Officer of Sumisip Municipality. The session aimed to educate the public on preventing online sexual abuse and exploitation of children—a crucial step in strengthening community awareness and protection mechanisms.
