FROM BOOKS TO BRAVERY: SAKAYAN-KAALAMAN INSPIRES KIDS WITH READING AND DISASTER PREPAREDNESS

The Sakayan-Kaalaman Reading Program 3.0 continues to inspire and empower young learners, reaching another milestone with its sixth session at Kaumpurnah Elementary School on September 9. From a simple literacy initiative, it has grown into a vibrant movement that brought together almost 100 pupils from Grades 2 to 6, all eager to strengthen their reading skills and love for learning.
Spearheaded by the City Government of Isabela under the leadership of Mayor Sitti Djalia Turabin-Hataman, the program is carried out in partnership with the City Information Office and the Local Youth Development Office.
This week’s session also featured the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO), which conducted a demo on what to do during emergencies, including basic responses when dealing with wounds or injuries.
The Youth Space Mentoring Program volunteers likewise sustained their active role in guiding learners, monitoring their progress, and ensuring every child receives the support they need to improve.
Held every Tuesday and Wednesday, the Reading Program dedicates one hour for partner-led lectures and two hours for literacy activities, with 20 sessions in total to provide consistent mentorship and measurable growth in reading. With the support of the HAPIsabela Mobile Library, learners enjoy access to more books and teaching resources that make each gathering engaging, interactive, and meaningful. (Words by E.
