With the theme of empowering every learner to read, the 2025 Regional Bawat Bata Makababasa Program (BBMP) Culminating Activity was successfully held on June 11 at the Badjao Floating Integrated School.
DepEd IX regional director Dr. Ruth Fuentes opened the activity with her welcome remarks. The accomplishments of the BBMP were then presented, showcasing the meaningful progress made by learners through the program. In a heartfelt message, Isabela City Mayor Sitti Djalia Turabin-Hataman proudly emphasized the importance of dreaming big by imploring to the learners with the challenge: “Ipangako niyo sa akin na magiging mayor balang araw ang isang Bajau.”
Governor-elect Mujiv Hataman also delivered a message of support, recognizing the resilience and progress of the learners and reaffirming the local government’s continued commitment to inclusive education.
One of the program’s highlights was the message of appreciation by DepEd Secretary Juan Edgardo “Sonny” Angara, who commended the collaboration of stakeholders, “Without the support of parents, teachers, stakeholders, and the LGU, BBMP wouldn’t be possible.”
The event also included a Handog Pasasalamat at Kalinaw presentation by BBMP tutored learners, reflecting their gratitude and the transformative impact of the literacy program.
Meanwhile, DepEd SDO-Isabela City SDS Dr. Jay Montealto emphasized in his message the power of community in shaping young minds, saying, “Not all heroes wear their crown and cape—the real saving angels behind BBMP are none other than the community itself. Be proud. Be a winner.”
The program closed with the BBMP Jingle/Farewell Song via video presentation and a Photo Opportunity and Fellowship that brought together all attendees, including Usec. Trygve Olaiver, Usec. Peter Corvera, Asec. Carmela Oracion, Asec. Jerome Buenviaje, Exec. Director Jennie Jocson, and other DepEd OSEC staff. IPMR Mary May Julhari, DepEd IX ARD Dr. Gregorio Cyrus Elejorde, SDO-Zamboang City SDS Dr. Majarani Jacinto, and ASDS Dr. Raymond Salvador were also present to show their support.
The Bawat Bata Makababasa program is an initiative launched by the Department of Education to to address the persistent issue of low reading comprehension among elementary school students, particularly in the early grades.
What distinguishes the BBMP is its community-centered approach, driven by a collective sense of responsibility. Teachers and volunteer tutors take the lead, while parents actively support the program, helping to keep students engaged and on track. Barangay officials play a crucial role in ensuring children attend. Additionally, medical professionals and private sector partners have contributed by offering vision screenings and providing eyeglasses to students who need them, ensuring that something as simple as poor eyesight does not prevent any child from learning to read.
