From a historic trading port to the seat of provincial governance, Isabela City stands as a testament to resilience and cultural harmony in the heart of Basilan.
Long before the Spanish era, the natives of Taguima — the Yakans, Sama Bangingi, Badjaos, and Tausugs — knew this place as Pasangan, a thriving market by the sea. Today, that same spirit of exchange and community drives the capital of Basilan.
The stone fortification Fuerte dela Reina Isabela Segunda is completed, honoring Queen Isabella II of Spain — giving the settlement its enduring name.
Basilan is established as a province, with Isabela designated as its capital and center of governance.
On April 25, 2001, Isabela is officially converted into a component city — a milestone for self-determined local governance.
Under the banner of honest and participatory governance, the city pursues a happy, flourishing, and vibrant future for all Isabeleños.
“We, the Office of the City Mayor of Isabela de Basilan, commit to satisfy the needs and pursuit of all Isabeleños towards a happy, flourishing, and vibrant City, where unity in diversity is celebrated and harnessed.”
A happy life.
A happy service.
A happy city.
